Erasing Hell: What God Said About Eternity, and the Things We’ve Made Up

Erasing Hell 1

Hell’ has and always will be a difficult doctrine to swallow; even, at times, for the strongest Christian. The concept falls spectacularly outside of our comfort zone, and the most natural reaction for most people is to ask: “But, how could a loving God…?”. Stop there, says Francis Chan, don’t finish that sentence.

Many of you may know that, recently, there has been a great deal of debate concerning the existence and essence of hell. Newspapers, magazines and blogs have all presented their thoughts on the topic, after Rob Bell released his new book, Love Wins. Francis Chan – author of Crazy Love and Forgotten God - has decided to offer his own response to this crucial doctrine, and has released a book entitled Erasing Hell.

So why not ask the question about God’s loving nature? Surely hell is contradictory to what we’ve all heard about God? The key message that Chan wants his reader to grasp is that when you begin to question God’s character, and presuppose what he would or wouldn’t do based on your own perception of morality and justice, you immediately rank your own rationality above the sovereignty of an almighty God.

In his video, Chan says:

“Do you ever even consider the possibility that maybe the Creator’s sense of justice is actually more developed than yours?”

Isaiah 55.8 says “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine” [NLT]. Chan challenges us to think about how we view God. Is he the author or life, the maker of the universe and the King of kings? Or is he something we’ve constructed to be within our reasoning and understanding? If the former, then – says Chan – who are we to question him?

With this book, Chan aims to present all that the Bible has to offer on the doctrine of hell, so that the reader can come to his, or her, own conclusion on the matter. He believes that the issue is too important to take lightly, and too far beyond our understanding to try to reason with. Take this opportunity to see what God has to say about it.
